Sunday 16 june – The Woods of Castelleone
Sunday 23 june – In the area of d’Arna
2nd Summer Sunsets walk. Meeting time 5:15 pm at the main square in the historical centre of Ripa. The walk is some 8 km long and will take us from Ripa through the surrounding countryside over hills with beautiful views of Assisi and into the shady woods of Ginestrella, over towards Sant’Egidio and then loop back to our point of departure.
The walk should take two to two and a half hours, and afterwards we can all have refreshments at the Taverna del Palio Arnese.
Please be sure to bring plenty of water, sun creams and a wide-brimmed hat of some sort.

Sunday 30 june – The three lakes: views fomr the hills
Third summer sunset walk from Porto, near Castiglione del Lago.
Meeting time is 5:15 pm in the village of Porto, next to the furniture store and Church.
We de part at 5:30 pm and will walk about 10 km. Return by 8:30pm.
If you are coming from Perugia head north passing the Lake and exit at Castiglione del Lago, turn right towards Piana and after the petrol station (3 km ) follow the signs for Pozzuolo, then turn towards Gioiella when you are in Pozzuolo (make sure to stay left) and then follow the signs for Porto at the next turn on the right.
If you are at the Lake already, go to Castiglione and then go to Gioiella at the roundabout.
The walk features Chiusi Lake to our right and lots of lovely Umbrian/Tuscan countryside. The views of Montepulciano, Chianciano, Chiusi, Monte Cetona and Monte Amiata are gorgeous from here.
Those who so wish, may join us for dinner at the Agriturismo Melagrani di Fabio Berna, as we have done in the past. The menu includes an antipasto, handmade pasta, pork shank with potatoes and salad. €20 per person. Please book by Friday evening by calling Louis Montagnoli at +39 347 171 5155.
Wear comfortable shoes, light clothing and bring water. Sun cream is a good idea!
Sunday 7 july – Between Colle San Paolo and Monte Solare
SUMMER SUNSET WALK (Tramonti d’estate) for Sunday, July 7, 2013
Meeting point at 5:15pm at the church of COLLE SAN PIETRO outside of Tavernelle.
The walk is some 8 km long and will last about 2½ hrs taking us through lovely shady woods and over sunny hilltops with gorgeous views of the lake.
Once back at our departure point, you can decide whether to join us for a glass of wine and some cheese on the lawn of the Fonte Manna dairy farm.
Please be sure to have proper footwear and bring along enough water.

Sunday 14 july – Views from Monte Tezio
Meet up at 17:15 at the parking lot of Monte Tezio (above Colle Umberto).
The climb up this lovely local mountain offers great views over the Lake, Mount Cetona and Mount Amiata even as we rise. The top of the mountain and its characteristic iron cross is our destination and from there the view is 360°, encompassing all of the mountains to the east as well. After a short rest at the top with a toast and a snack, we’ll enjoy the setting sun and head back down to our cars.
Please wear proper walking attire and footwear, and bring water (or anything else you’d like to toast with) and a snack. A shawl or light jacket may be needed on the way down as the temperatures drop with the setting sun.
The walk is some 9km long and will last about 3 hrs, rests not included. Total ascent is 440m. We’ll be back at the cars by 20:45 or 21.00

Sunday 21 july –Mongiovino and its surroundings
Meeting time 17:15 and departure at 17:30 from Loc. La Lupaia.
Total walking time 3 hours, distance 11km, maximum height reached 496 m above sea level. For organizational purposes, please make your reservation by July 19 for the walk and the dinner.
How to get there by car: exit at Magione and go in the direction of Chiusi. After having passed through the little town of Sant’Arcangelo, leave the main road and head left to Panicale. 3 km after the town of Casalini turn left onto a dirt road following the sign that says La Lupaia.
If, on the other hand, you are coming from the Pievaiola road drive up to Panicale and then go down towards Castiglione del Lago, turn right towards Le Mura and Casalini, then right again after Casalini onto a dirt road following the sign for La Lupaia and park.
The walk is a loop that starts in a woods and then follows the crest of the hill, from which there a lovely views over the lake and the Nestore valley. We will walk through an olive grove, past an ancient ruin over a dirt road to the castle of Mongiovino, built in 1312. After a brief stop there we go back into the woods again and walk upwards to the top of a nameless hill with a breathtaking 360° view. After another stretch of trail in the woods we’ll get to a place called Belveduto (meaning the same as belvedere) from which, as the sun sets, more views can be enjoyed of the lake, Mt Amiata and Mt Cetona. It is at this point that we begin the last leg of the walk which takes us back to our departure place.
Please, wear summer walking attire with comfortable shoes and don’t forget your sun hat and creams and a bottle of water in your backpack.
A dinner with wine tasting for after the walk has been organised at the Cantina Il Poggio in loc. Macchie di Castiglione del Lago, about a ten minute drive away. Cost per person €16.
The cost for joining us on the walk is €3, the cost for walking with us every sunset walk of the season (they last until November) is €20.

Sunday 28 july – Views from Cibottola Castle - at 17:15
This week’s Summer Sunsets walk will go to Cibottola which can be reached from Pietrafitta or Mercatello. The Cibottola castle dates to the XIII century but is no longer entirely accessible after the last earthquake. It does still have its outer wall intact, as well as some of the bastions. The walk is over forest roads past the remains of San Bartolomeo, a XIII century Franciscan convent, and then we ascend to about 420 m above sea level with lovely views here and there. The oaths we’ll follow take us through wooded areas and over dirt roads until we head back to our cars over fields. The 9 km of the walk should be able to be done in about 3 hours and there will be refreshments at San Bartolomeo di Cibottola, as well as a nice piece of local flat bread.

Sunday 4 august - Between Città della Pieve and Piegaro
Walk length 9 km, duration 3 hrs, total climb some 220 m.
Point of departure ay 17:15 at the Azienda Agraria Alessandro Mazzuoli (km 85,2 SS 71 between Moiano and Po’ Bandino, in the area of Città della Pieve, turn left when you come from Perugia or from Castiglione del Lago-Arezzo. Those coming from the city of Perugia should take the road towards Chiusi that goes through S. Arcangelo-Panicarola). You leave the SS 71 when you hit a pine tree-lined road (NOT the cypress trees of the road before the pine tree road!) and follow it past a big farm estate on the right until you come to the Mazzuoli farm.
The walk starts from the house through the fields and woods, then upwards along a trail shaded by woods that then goes down towards Maranzano. We will pass an ancient church (San iagio), old oak and olive groves. We’ll have arrest in the shade on a field and then take off again along a dirt road downwards through ravines towards San Litardo, and then a trail with great views of the lake that will lead us back to our departure point.

All walks are loops and last about 3 hours, stops excluded. The tours conclude with a dinner at a farm or winery. Details will be communicated from week to week.
Special Summer Sunset walk A hike in the Monti del Trasimeno area - 7 September at 5pm
A special summer sunset walk is being organised to celebrate the Correspondence Festival put on by the city of Magione. The walk will start at the parking lot of Monte del Lago and after a stroll through the old streets of this village to discover the sounds and sensations which inspired the poetry of Vittoria Aganoor Pompili and others who lived in this enchanting place wrote. Following a local bike track we’ll visit the Zocco ruins and then walk over a trail through olive groves and woods, the habitat of wild rabbits and pheasants which scamper about in the undergrowth – and we beg you, this time, to leave your beloved dogs at home. The woods end in a gorgeous panoramic spot overlooking Monte Colognola.
The walk should take about 2 ½ hours and is about 6 ½ km long.
After the walk there will a chance to partake in the festivities at Monte del Lago and dinner at the Rosso di Sera restaurant (€15).
