Distance: 8 km

Climb: 300 meters

This summer sunset walk will take us over the hills near Migliano (Marsciano). From the Valverde we will ascend to the Rigo river and then walking past golden fields of grain and through woods we’ll reach Monteagello, an ancient village along the old road that leads to Orvieto.  The views are lovely and span from Monte Peglia all the way to the distant Sibillini, and the gently rolling hills with the towns of Migliano and Montevibiano Vecchio.  As the sun sets we’ll be walking over a dirt road until we return to our point of departure.

Please wear appropriate walking clothes (long trousers recommended) and footwear, and bring plenty of water.
There will be a delicious dinner, for those who desire to join us, at the Valverde’s restaurant. The dinner will cost €20 with a menu as follows:

Sunday 13 JulyBetween the Tiber and its hills: river sunsets

Meeting time: 5pm at the Parlesca station

Duration: 3 ½ hrs

Distance: 11 km

You can reach the Parlesca station taking the Resina exit from the E45 and then heading towards Parlesca.

The walk begins surrounded by fields of ripening crops towards the Solfagnano hills past Villa Bennicelli, a walled in town with the San Silvestro church.

After a brief rest we’ll head up to the hill’s crest to enjoy a 360° view and then down again into the Valcaprara ravine, after which we’ll go along the Tiber river until we reach the medieval Torre Strozzi.   It is here that, in the little house next to the tower between the grass field and what was once the stables, we’ll be able to enjoy a lovely buffet-style dinner (€12, please reserve by Friday evening) featuring fresh local produce.  Those who do not dine can reach their car easily (500 m from where the dinner is).

We recommend long trousers (to protect your legs from the high grass), proper footwear and plenty of water.

Sunday 27 JulyUp high around Preggio

Meeting point: in Preggio, parking lot just outside town headed towards Umbertide.

Meeting Time: 4:45 pm

Walk duration: 3½ hrs

Walk distance: 10 km

Total climb: 400 m

You can easily reach Preggio from Perugia along the Perugia Bettolle motorway, exit at Torricella and follow the signs for Castel Rigone. Once there follow the signs for Umbertide and, at the fork in the road 3km later, stay left for Preggio.  Just before the town itself, on the right, there is a large parking lot where you can leave your car.

The walk starts over the main road but soon we reach a dirt road that goes down to the lovely Stipa mill, in the bottom of the little valley.  We cross over the Bellona river several times, which should not be a problem in terms of water level.
We then reach the lovely Pian di Marte, whose fame dates to the Battle of Trasimene. The walk then goes up through a woods over a path to the crest from which we’ll watch the sun setting over the lake, and then we’ll walk back to Preggio.

At the end of the excursion you can stay on and enjoy Preggio nel Tempo, a festival featuring ancient games and flavours.  There will be food stands and places to sit. Dancing on the piazza follows, and the evening ends with a giant bonfire.

Bring plenty of water, a sun hat and walking shoes.

Sunday 3 AugustAmong the olives groves and the vegetation of Tuoro

SUMMER SUNSETS: Sunday 3 August

Meeting time: 5 pm in Gosparini

Walk duration: 3 hrs

Walk length: 9 km

Total ascent: 250m.

We’ll gather at the parking lot of the Lo Scoiattolo restaurant. To get there go to Tuoro and then follow the signs for Lisciano Niccone until you reach Gosparini.

The walk will take place over hills and through woods from where there are great views of the Lake in the distance.  The first part of the walk is up and over a wide grassy crest that goes towards the woods of Castelluccio.  The views from here are gorgeous, spanning over the thickly wooded area that goes towards the Pierle valley, and in the background is Mt Nerone, Mt Acuto and Mt Catria.  As we head downwards we’ll look out over Cortona and a bit of the Valdichiana.  Then it’s into the fresh and fragrant woods of Monte Castelluccio we go over trails to enjoy the silence of nature here.  There follows an ascent to the top of Mt Castelluccio at 747 m on well-signed paths over the crest, where we’ll be out under the vast sky as the sun begins to set.

At the end of the walk, those who so wish can enjoy a dinner at the Scoiatolo restaurant, which will offer us a traditional meal for €20.  We do need to reserve that by 1 August.

The cost of the walk is €3, or you can get the whole yearly walks package for €20.
